Thomas Kay - Technical Designer
As a professional in the signage industry for many years, I have worked on many projects from small one off locations to multi-site program roll-outs.
With my experience and the varying projects that have come my way, I have competence levels in a number of different software drawing packages. My current workflow to develop my shop drawings and fabrication files utilizing CorelDraw and Sketchup. It is my feeling that the addition of 3D as a tool really explains the design intent for both professionals in the field and clients who are trying to grasp exactly "what is being presented". I will use Adobe Illustrator in wayfinding projects where multiple files (type-setting) and braille are required. Photoshop / Illustrator in print production whenever it is needed. My go to statement is these programs are tools and different tools are needed for different jobs.
My hope is with the work shown, it becomes evident the attention to detail required, taking in consideration; materials / material size limitations, structure required to be engineered at a safe level and reasonable cost for the project. I was always taught; for a project to be successful, consideration must always be taken for fabrication, shipping, installation and serviceability of the signage elements.
